Book Signing - Bernie Gilmer
Bernie Gilmer - It’s UP in the AIR
Author Bernie Gilmer and co-author Mike Ayers will be at Village Lights signing copies of their self-published book.
While Bernie Gilmer was surfing the Internet in June of 2018, a news account mixing the topics of diversity and air safety would appear in the same headline. And the accompanying story caught his immediate attention, stirring up the juices still flowing from his newspaper background. What immediately crossed his mind – while what he perceived as a curious and troubling revelation that placed the Federal Aviation Administration in the crosshairs of an alleged scandal – were two of his closest Indiana friends. Both Al Gray and Mike Ayers had retired as air traffic controllers out of the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center after many years of service to the federal government and the American people. And what poignantly came to mind were the decisions of three U.S. presidents – Republicans Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama. Extensive research for creating It’s UP in the AIR will take readers through much of the history of the growth of an industry where common sense requires the best safety requirements. And requires the best-trained traffic controllers for safeguarding the skies for the millions of airline customers who fly worldwide. In thumbing through the dozen chapters, you will discover that the author’s two close friends and their families are not the only ones across the nation to be impacted … by the decisions of these three U.S. presidents.
Bernie Gilmer grew up in Central Kansas during the 1940s and ’50s. He spent six years satisfying his military obligation with three years in the U.S. Army Reserves in Kansas and three years in the Alabama National Guard.
